Quick DYMO Fixes

Updating drivers manually for LabelWriter ® on Windows

If the LabelWriter appears under unspecified on Windows in Devices and Printers, usually the computer has not identified that device as a printer yet.

  1. Go to Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Device Manager.
  2. Select View>Show Hidden Devices
  3. The LabelWriter should be listed under Other Devices, Printers or Software category.
  4. Right-click on LabelWriter and select Update Driver Software….
  5. In the next window, pick Browse my computer for driver software.
  6. Click the Browse… button and point to one of the folder locations depending on the DYMO software you are using:

      A.  DYMO Connect:

    For 64-bit systems: C:\Program Files (x86)\DYMO\DYMO Connect\Drivers
    For 32-bit systems: C:\Program Files\DYMO\DYMO Connect\Drivers

      B.  DYMO Label v.8:

    For 64-bit systems: C:\Program Files (x86)\DYMO\DYMO Label Software\Drivers
    For 32-bit systems: C:\Program Files\DYMO\DYMO Label Software\Drivers

  7. Click ‘Next’ and you should receive a notification that Windows has successfully performed the task. If you are receiving any error messages at this point, please contact us.
  8. On some versions of Windows the printer will still show the DYMO under Unspecified even though in Device Manager it appears under Printers. However, you should still be able to print. It’s a Windows glitch, and restarting Windows often resolves that.

Scales FAQ

The scale should be situated on a flat, level, and stable surface. The scale platform should be securely fastened to the scale sub-platform. The scale can be affected by electrical and RF (Radio Frequency) interference. Operation near power transmission lines is not recommended. Operation near appliances which switch on and off with heavy currents (letter openers, copiers, microwave ovens) is not recommended. The recommended operating temperature for the scale is room temperature (around 77 degrees Fahrenheit ). Allow the scale three hours to adjust to a the new climate if the scale was stored in a location a hot/cold environment. If the scale is to be operated in environments above or below room temperature, it is recommended that the scale be re-calibrated in that environment after a three hour adjustment period.

Overload can have different meanings, all having to do with a weight that is too high. It may mean the weight placed on the scale exceeds its capacity, such as putting 15 lbs on a 10 lb scale. On a rate-calculating scale, it may mean you are trying to perform a function which cannot be performed with the weight registered on the scale, such as attempting to send a 5 lb letter using a service restricted to 1 lb letters. Symbols of overload include OVLD and OOOO.

The only sure way to determine if your scale is weighing correctly is by placing a known weight on the scale. Examples of a "known weight" would include a piece from a precision weight set, or perhaps a measured weight used for exercising.

The S100 and S250 minimum weight that can be read is 1 LB. The S400 minimum weight that can be read 2.5 LBs.

Place the scale on a flat and level surface. Power on the scale by connecting it to a computer with an available USB port. The computer must be powered on. Press and hold the Tare button for two seconds. After two seconds the screen will briefly display CAL followed by 0.0. Press the Tare button. The screen will now display 5.0.0. Place a calibrated 5 pound weight on the scale. Press the Tare button once more. The screen will briefly display Cal, followed by Pass. Remove the weight from the scale and disconnect the USB cable.

Straight weigh scales only weigh items, they don't calculate postage or shipping rates. However, USPS, UPS, Fed Ex, and DHL offer rate calculators on their website. You will be able to display the cost of shipping your package with this tool.

Due to the implementation of a new zoned rating structure by the USPS in May of 2008, Express Mail rates will no longer be supported on DYMO scales. When selecting the Express Mail rates option, the scale will display 0.00.

The DYMO 5 lb. USB Scale receives power directly from the computer through USB. If not used in conjunction with a computer, the scale can also be powered by a 9-volt alkaline battery.

You cannot share the DYMO 5lb USB scale to other users on a network like you would a printer or a scanner. However, because the DYMO 5lb USB scale requires no special drivers, you can easily connect it to any computer.

We do not recommend that our scales be submerged in any type of fluid. You may clean the tray of the scale with a mild cleaner.

A load cell is a mechanism in the scale which bends slightly when weight is put onto the platform. The microcomputer in the scale measures the amount of bending and translates that into the digital display, which is the weight.

SDK FAQs

DYMO offers an Apple Script based SDK for Mac OS. The DYMO SDK for Linux consists of CUPS drivers and several command line script samples. You can download MacOS SDK here. You can download Linux SDK and CUPS drivers here.

Yes. We have added .NET samples in the latest SDK. Samples are provided in C#, VB, ASP.NET, and C++. The samples also provide examples on how to control roll selection when using the LabelWriter Twin Turbo printer as well as printing to the tape portion of the LabelWriter Duo printer.

This will occur if you do not properly set the label size in your application. The DYMO SDK includes a sample VB program (entitled ?Paper Size?) that uses the Windows API to set a paper size in a printer driver.

There is not a Java sample because it requires third party software that you must license, download and set up with your Java Development Environment.

Yes. For Internet Explorer we have included Java Script and VBScript samples in the latest release of the SDK. For Firefox we have introduced three XPCOM objects: nsIDymoAddin, nsIDymoLabels, and nsIDymoTape. These objects provide the same functionality as the IDymoAddin, IDymoLabels, and IDymoTape interfaces (part of the high-level COM interface). You can use these XPCOM objects from Java Script to print labels from a web page loaded in the Firefox browser. The XPCOM sample illustrates this process.

It depends on the programming language you're using. Try switching the order you set these two attributes. For example, if your program does not work when you set the image source, then the file name, try setting the file name first, and then the image source.

The IDymoTape interface provides the functionality to create labels using the (D1) tape cassette portion of the LabelWriter Duo printer. See the Software Development Kit (SDK) documentation for more detailed information. The Tape SDK Sample (written in VB) shows you how to print to the tape part of the LabelWriter Duo printer.

The IDymoAddIn3 and IDymoAddIn4 COM interfaces provide additional functions that support printing to the LabelWriter Twin Turbo. The "Print2()" interface of IDYMOAddIn3 is used to direct the output to a particular roll(see the SDK documentation for more details). The .NET samples also show you how to print to a LabelWriter Twin Turbo.

The IE Script samples that ship with the DLS SDK use the SetAddress function to print address labels. In order to print bar code labels, you'll need to replace SetAddress with the SetField function. To print barcodes from a web page, open the DYMO Label Software (DLS) and create a new label. Place a barcode object on the label. Set the symbology for the bar code object. Make a note of the reference name for the bar code object on the label. The default name is: BARCODE. Save the label template.

Yes, there is. You can download it from our Developers' Blog: Click here

In that case, please visit the DYMO Developers blog Click Here.

The high-level COM interface is the simplest way to add label printing capability to your application and should be considered the standard method to use. Using the high-level COM interface, you can print a label with as few as five lines of code (see the JavaScript and VBScript sample code for examples). If you want to print labels where the placement of the items (barcode, text, graphics, and so on) is constant, but their values change, then use the high-level COM interface. The low-level COM interface is useful if you need to do more complex operations, such as create, move, and resize label objects dynamically within your application. With these added capabilities comes a great deal more complexity. The DLL interface is the most complex but the most powerful interface. It's unnecessary for an application that creates simple/basic labels. But if you plan on writing an application for custom label design and printing, then the DLL interface may suitable. The DDE interface is provided to support older applications that were developed in the past and should not be used going forward. All functionalities provided by the DDE interface are supported by the high-level COM interface.

No. DYMO Connect does not have the address book feature and cannot open ABX files created in DYMO Label Software. Instead, it has the feature to import Google and Outlook contacts.

The installation process for DYMO Label Software (DLS), version 8, does not delete any pre-existing files. The old address book files and saved label templates can be found in the DYMO Label folder by default (or in another location where you previously saved them). To find your old address book files, follow these steps: Launch the new version of DLS. Click on the Address Book menu option on top and select Open. The dialog box should now be displayed with a list of previously saved address book files. Select the one you want and click on Open. If your previously created label templates are not automatically shown in the Saved Labels section in DLS (you can find it in the bottom part of the Labels tab), please click on File menu option on top and select Open. Find the label template you want, open it and save it - it should populate the Saved Labels section now. Please repeat these steps for other previously created label templates.

DYMO Label Software v8 is compatible with U.S. installations of ACT! 2007(v.9), 2008(v.10), 2009(v.11), 2010(v.12), and 2011(v.13), 2012(v.14), 2013(v.15), 2014(v.16), 2015 (v.17), 2016, (v.18), 2017 (v.19). There are three types of serialization available in Rhino Connect Software. They include: Simple Serialization - creates a series by incrementing one alphanumeric character in the series. With this method you have two starting values that are incremented by the same amount at the same time. Advanced Serialization - creates a series by incrementing two different alphanumeric characters consecutively. With this method you have two starting values, two increments, and two counts.
